The mission of the Temple Sholom Mitzvah Committee is to provide opportunities for the Temple Sholom congregation to fulfill its obligation of Tikkun Olam or to improve the world.
Our goals are:
1. to organize a mitzvah-of-the-month, usually associated with the Jewish holidays,
involving activities and events in which temple members may participate in the
following areas:
a. food drives: such as Project Isaiah, Thanksgiving turkeys for SHIP, Holiday food
baskets for Rosh Hashanah and Passover, Can-Can (fruit and vegetables) for
Tu B'Shevat, et al
b. collections of other items: such as toys for Hanukkah, toiletries and dental
hygiene products for the food bank, and school supplies for needy children, et al
c. road cleanup of North Bridge Street, through the Somerset County Adopt-A-
Road Program
2. to be available to help our congregants on a short term basis in the areas of:
a. transportation
b. meals
c. shopping
d. comfort
3. to provide periodic notification to the congregation of other community service
opportunities
Other mitzvah activities at Temple Sholom include:
Blood Drives and Nursing home visits through the Sisterhood; Sukkah building and tzedakah collection through the Yellow Candle Program by the Men's Club; Twice weekly visits to Somerset Medical Center and other institutions by Bikkur Cholim; and Hospitality through our College Committee and the Ritual Committee. Our educational organizations, such as Preschool Place and Kindergarten, Hebrew School and Hebrew High School, and our youth groups work to incorporate mitzvot in their curriculum. Many of our congregants also participate in our auxiliary organization, Chevrah Kadesha or holy burial society, which provides the service of preparation for proper Jewish burial.
