History and Tour

The first Jewish family settled in the Somerville area in 1864. By 1880, there were enough Jews for a minyan and congregation Anshe Chesed was formed in 1906. Over the years, Jewish life flourished in Central New Jersey and Temple Beth El (reform) and Temple Beth Israel (conservative) were founded by the mid 50's.

In 1966, Temple Beth Israel merged with congregation Anshe Chesed and Temple Sholom was born. Continued growth brought us to our present Bridgewater site in 1970. A new Chapel and more classrooms were added in 1994.

Much artistry and symbolism are embodied in Temple Sholom, reflecting the vitality of spirit and warmth of family to be found in our award-winning programs and activities.
